Munroe Island in Kollam, a Serene Destination to Enjoy Your Holidays in Kerala

Munroe Island, which is also known as Munroe Thuruth in the local language, is a cluster of eight small islands. The island is named after Colonel John Munroe, a British official who played a major part in the construction of canals and the initiation of backwater cruising in the region. 


The Munroe Island is situated at a distance of about 25 km from the Kollam town and is accessible with both road and backwaters. The island is place on the confluence of Ashtamudi Lake and the Kallada River, in the Kollam district of Kerala.

The boat race takes place after 28 days of Onam and the competition is held in a grand manner, with participants from different villages around the region taking part in the race. 

Long attractive snake boats are used during this competition and it attracts thousands of tourists who come to witness this race from the shorelines. Tourists can also opt to go for swimming in the cool refreshing waters of the island or casually lie down on the shore while taking in the spectacular view of the sunset. 

Best Time to Visit
Except the monsoon season, the place can be visited during the rest of the year. Still, the best time to visit the island is from October to May.

One of the best options to stay at this place is the home stays, provided by the natives of the island. There are also few house boats that offer overnight stay to the guests.

By Train: The closest railway station to the island is Kollam Railway Station, located at a distance of about 25 km.  The station is well linked with various major cities within the country.

By Road: The Island is easily accessible by road with Kollam bus stand, located at a distance of about 25 km.  Kollam is well connected with various major parts within the state of Kerala. 

By Ferry: The best option to reach the island is by ferry from the boat jetty in Kollam, located at a distance of about 3 km from the Kollam railway station.
