The arch dam of Idduki
which is located at a heart of the district is perched perfectly within the
stands of Kuravanmala and Kurathimala. Established and owned by Kerala state
electricity board the dam supports the cause of generation of Hydro-electricity
and the base station of it is located at Moolamattom which is located at a
distance of 43 km from the site of Idukki.
Periyar River between the
ravine of Kuravan and Kurathi Hills in Kerala is one of the highest arch dams
of the Asia. Measuring the height of 167.68 m the arch dam is amongst the three
dam which is useful for generating the electricity.
History
It was in 1919 when idea
of constructing the dam for generation of power was conceived and to elaborate
the history the role of Shri Kolumban, who was the head of the Aarya during
that time walked through the doors of Malankara Estate along with his friend AC
Thomas Edattu.
While walking the line of
the forest Mr. Thomas spotted the beauty flowing between the hills of Kuravan
and Kurathi and thought of creating the Arch dam and he in his turn consulted
with W.J.John of Malankara Estate and surveyed the whole area and submitted the
report to the government of Travancore in 1932 on the grounds of constructing a
dam at Idukki for Power Generation.
It was in 1947 when the
erstwhile chief electrical engineer Sri. P. Joseph John suggested the initial
examination report and after he went through the report he submitted it to the
planning commission who commissioned and authorised the bill and passed the
scheme and implemented in 1963 to start the initial work of the projects.
Foreign
Aid
While constructing the
wall of the arch dam the government took a considerable amount of help from the
foreign department of Canada, who in turn helped the project to develop through
financial measures.
Usage
When it comes to the
utility of the dam then they project irrigation and electricity for the common
use of the people. Beside that owing to its natural splendour the site of the
dam has been the key attraction for the people who comes here during the time
of relaxation and pays a minimum amount to see the beauty of the arch dam.
Electricity
or Power Generation
The main characteristic
feature of the dam is to generate the power so that they could embark the light
for the people who still suffer the night without the fundamental course of
electricity. Through this project the
flow of the Periyar River which is the largest river in Kerala is trapped by
the reservoir.
When it comes to the
diversion then conductor plays the main part which comprises the mechanism of
pressure shaft and turbine to create the sufficient power to create the
electricity.
Irrigation
The amount of water which
flows through the bends of Kudayathurpuzha via tunnel and open channel are abstracted
for the cause of irrigation at Muvattupuzha Valley.
